Import subscribers

In this article, you will learn how to add and update your contacts in Rule. With our import tool, you can add or update your subscribers. Import via file or by copying and pasting fields directly into the tool. If you want to import data from another system, check out our integration guides here.

Before you start

  1. Customers with Rule Free can import your contacts and send 1000 emails in total per month. If you want to see more about our other subscription types, you can read more on our pricing page.
  2. We recommend working with a program like Microsoft Excel or Google Sheets, and saving documents as a CSV or XSL file.
  3. When adding language and phone number in your file, it must be in the correct format for it to be imported correctly. Read about language here and phone numbers here.

For file import, it is important for both readability and simplicity to import subscriber data in the correct format and with the correct spelling. Some examples are email address, phone number, and language.

Below you will find an example of a file import with the most common fields with examples of formatting, correct country code for phone numbers, and the correct ISO code for language.

For a small number of recipients, you can manually import the subscribers, please double check that you write the subscribers in the way shown in the example below.

  4. To continue importing your subscribers, click on the next step in the upper right corner.

Tags and preferences

  1. Choose tag or tags. If you are not familiar with tags in Rule, you can read more about it here. If you do not have a tag already, you can create one in this step. Write a suitable name that you want your subscribers to be placed in, and click on "+" that appears on the right.
  2. If you have preferences from before, you can activate it here when importing your new subscribers. If you want to know more about preferences, you can read more here!
  3. Then click on "Next step" in the upper right corner.

Match custom fields

Now we will match the columns from your file to custom fields in Rule.

  1. This is what it looks like when you match "Email" with email addresses.
  2. If it doesn't match automatically, it will say "do not import this data", click on the dropdown menu to match the correct custom field.

If you don't have a custom field that you want to match, we will show you below how to create your own custom fields!
