How do I create a combined segment?

Before you start, we recommend that you understand:

  1. What is a custom field?
  2. How segments work

What is a combined segment

Combining segments means exactly what it sounds like, you take two or more segments with their different values and merge them into one. A combined segment has the same properties as a regular segment, the only difference is that its values are multiple and the customer must match all the rules in the combined segment.

Examples of combined segments

We will go through two different examples and in step 3 we will show how to set up the combined segment with images step by step!

Example 1:We want to segment out two different types of member data and create a combined segment for them. For example, we want to get members who come from Sweden and have spent over 3000 kronor in order to make a customized mailing to them, perhaps offer a discount code for their next purchase.

Procedure:

  1. First, you need to create a regular segment, based on the tag where you have your members, and when you set up rules, you should have the segment rule "Language=Swedish".
  2. Then you create a new regular segment, also based on the tag where you have your orders, and set up the rule spent < 3000 kronor.
  3. Now we want to combine these two regular segments we have created, we will show you how to do that in step 3 below.

Example 2:We want to segment out all members who speak English and have opened the last four newsletters. This shows engagement from the customer and you can then create a customized mailing to them.

Procedure:

  1. First, you need to create a regular segment, based on the tag where you have your English-speaking members, and when you set up rules, you should have the segment rule "Language=English".
  2. Then you create a new regular segment, based on the tag that you have for your English-speaking newsletters, and set up the rule "Has opened 4 latest mailings"
  3. Now we want to combine these two regular segments we have created, how we do that is shown in step 3 below.

How do you set up a combined segment?

  1. Click on 'Subscribers'
  2. Then on 'Segments'

Then on '+ New segment' at the top right

  1. Name the segment something appropriate
  2. Describe what the segment will do, this is not mandatory
  3. Choose the tag the segment will be based on
  4. Fill in 'Regular segment'
  5. Create!

  1. Match 'All'
  2. Choose the field 'Language'
  3. Choose 'Is equal to'
  4. Choose which language
  5. Save and sync!

Set up another regular segment in the same way as above, in order to then be able to combine these segments.

For example:

  1. Match 'All'
  2. Choose your order field
  3. Choose 'Is greater than or equal to'
  4. Then the amount, which in this case is 3,000, but you can choose any amount you want
  5. Save and sync

Combine segments

Now we will combine the two segments we have created, you start in the same way by creating a new segment

  1. Name the 'Segment'
  2. Describe what the segment will do, this is not mandatory
  3. Choose tags
  4. Choose 'Combined segment'
  5. Create

  1. Match 'All'
  2. Choose the segments you just created
  3. Save and sync!
